Partnership Working with Newcastle University to award Full Registration for NUMed graduates
In 2011 Newcastle University opened a medical school, known as Newcastle University Medicine Malaysia (NUMed) in the State of Johor, on the southern tip of peninsular Malaysia. NUMed delivers the Newcastle MBBS curriculum with graduates obtaining the same General Medical Council (GMC) approved UK Primary Medical Qualification as their Newcastle-based counterparts.
Trainees and Trainers within our region past and present have taken up opportunities to work for a finite period of time for Newcastle University at their Malaysia campus in roles such as Teaching Fellows and Lecturers. Advertised opportunities are routinely emailed around our networks, however, to make an informal enquiry as to any current positions please contact Professor Chris Baldwin, CEO & Provost, Christopher.firstname.lastname@example.org
As a result of partnership working between Health Education England North East office and Newcastle University Medical School, an application was made to the General Medical Council to seek approval for provisionally registered doctors (NUMed graduates) training in Malaysia to be considered for sign-off of Full Registration. The application was not to seek to provide a UK Foundation Programme in Malaysia, but to demonstrate that the outcomes for provisionally registered doctors had been met through the Malaysian House Officer Programme under the responsibility of the HEE NE Postgraduate Dean.
The GMC confirmed in March 2014 its approval of this application and, other than the Foundation Programme, is currently the only alternative programme for Full GMC Registration.
Quality management responsibilities of educational programmes and assessment via Annual Review of Competence Progression (ARCP) remain the responsibility of the Postgraduate Dean and are on-going requirements by the GMC, the same as for any postgraduate medical programme. A parallel structure to that of the Northern Foundation School has been established, following the same quality governance used.
Several cohorts of NUMeD graduates have now submitted for ARCP and have been successfully signed off by HEE NE for GMC Full Registration through this process. Future graduates will move through this process should they opt to be part of this programme.
This programme of work is in partnership with Newcastle University and cost neutral to HEE in financial terms. Time is given by staff within the north east office of HEE on the understanding that this is an example of educational excellence that raises the medical profile of the region, both undergraduate and postgraduate, for the benefit of all.
